James Stewart & Co., LTD.

Diamond Jubilee 1923.

________________________________________________

Sixty Years Progress in Central Queensland.

The old saying “Great Oaks from little acorns grow,” is well illustrated by the growth of the house of Messrs. James Stewart and Company, Limited. In 1863 it was started in a little room situated between Quay Lane and East-street, and from that small beginning has steadily grown until today the name of “Stewart’s” Rockhampton, is known from Adelaide to the Gulf, and from the Pacific to the border. The reputation for value and dependable merchandise gained in the early days has increases year by year, and now, although the original founder, Mr. James Stewart, has passed away, the standard he set is being steadily maintained.

Starting as a retail establishment, it has extended slowly and surely, subsequently adding a wholesale department for the benefit of those smaller stores and traders who were not in such close touch with the foreign market, and for the convenience of those living away from Rockhampton, branches were opened in Mount Morgan, Longreach, Blackall, and Barcaldine.

Time, thought and money were spent in studying how to give the best possible value, together with quality, to the public, and the result was that factories were established for the manufacture of furniture, bedding, shirts, pyjamas, underwear, &c. Today (1923) the House holds proud position of being one of the largest in Central Queensland.

On January 27th, 1923, Mr. James Stewart passed away in the sixtieth year of the firm’s history, and the direction of affairs fell on the shoulders of Mr. Robert Macfarlane who, unhappily did not live long enough to exercise the ripe experience he had gained through forty years connection with the House. The management then devolved on Mr. John Macfarlane alone, who since then has instituted a vigorous policy of improvements so as to give greater comfort to the shopping public, as well as giving better facilities exhibiting goods &c. Departments have been expanded, alterations have been made in the buildings, giving more light and air, and, judging by the response, those efforts have been greatly appreciated by the firm’s large clientele.

Times change, conditions alter, and improvements are made, but the policy of the House set by the founder, Mr. James Stewart, will always stand, that is-Better Quality-Better Value-Better Service.
